write up on Foley - Stuart's lesson
The task we were were set was to watch the film 'Psycho' with no sound and think about the sounds that were added and recreate them. The scene that we were asked to recreate the sounds for was the shower scene.
We were given cue sheets and told to go off into groups and try and see what materials we could use to recreate the sounds of the shower scene. The idea of having these cue sheets was to be able to write down the materials that we would use for each part of the shower scene.
Foley is a technical process where sounds are manipulated or added during the stage of post production. We had a workshop about Foley and how we could recreate the sounds for the film scene. There were lots of different materials we could use to create sounds. This was including using a piece of bubblewrap for shower curtains; using a box of rice and pouring it into a cup for the sound effect of the shower; my wheelchair banging into a wall for the sound effect of the female character being shoved against the wall; and using a knife stabbed into a cabbage for the sound effect of the murderer stabbing the female. A balloon was rubbed to recreate the sound of the woman's body sliding down wet tiles. Also there was the sound of a door slamming. I recreated the sound of the scream of horror. Finally, the equipment that we used to record these sounds was a dictaphone. The most successful sound effects were: the rice being poured into the box, the footsteps of the woman walking, the screaming, and the balloon. The least successful sounds were: the cabbage being stabbed with a knife and the bubblewrap being used as a curtain sound.
When people create the sounds for these films sometimes they have to use 'found content.' This is where people can download any resource off the internet. The conditions of using found content is that you must get the producer's permission in order to use it otherwise they can carry out legal proceedings against you.
The editing software we used to edit these sounds was Premier Pro C6. We applied sound effects but we may add some music later.
The scene still needs to be recreated as my group created the sequence but the programme decided not to save the sequence so we recreate it again and add in the sound effects to the video and once that is done, we will need to add in some horror music.
